The baby kangaroo development process starts in one of those really surprising and almost confusing ways in the animal world. A newborn kangaroo, often called a joey, shows up after a pregnancy that lasts only about a month. When it’s born, it’s extremely small, blind, has no hair on its body, and it weighs under a gram.
Even with that fragile start, the joey immediately begins an incredible climb. By pure instinct, it crawls through its mother’s fur, and it keeps going until it finds the pouch opening. Right there it latches onto a teat and stays in that warm space for several months, drinking milk that is tuned to change as per the need.
Researchers have reported something pretty astonishing: a mother kangaroo can make different kinds of milk at the same time, and it depends on the age or stage of her young baby. In other words, while one joey is still very tiny, another might be older and needs something else… and somehow her body manages it to feed both without “messing up” their growth.

As the weeks continue, the joey grows fur, opens its eyes, and builds stronger legs. Step by step, it starts to peek outside the pouch, then it makes quick, short excursions. When something risky or threatening shows up, it doesn’t hesitate and goes back inside the pouch for safety.
