In 1833, it seemed strange to move ice from Boston all the way to India. The shipment had to last about four months on the water. It also had to cross the equator. Then it still needed to arrive in a place known for very hot weather. Even with all that, Frederic Tudor from Boston thought it could work as a trade.
The first experimental shipment left Boston aboard the Tuscany with about 180 tons of freshwater ice harvested from New England. But Tudor's real invention was not simply cutting enormous blocks from frozen ponds. It was figuring out how to make a wooden ship behave like a giant thermos.
The ice was placed inside a specially constructed insulated chamber. Layers of wooden planks and roughly a foot of dried tannery bark, known as “tan,” surrounded the cargo. The blocks were packed tightly together, while hay was compressed above them before the compartment was sealed. The bark was especially useful because it was cheap and a poor conductor of heat.
Then came the unexpected discovery.

When the Tuscany finally reached Calcutta after four months and seven days, around 100 tons of ice remained. But investigators found that the melting had not happened exactly as they had predicted. Instead of simply shrinking inward from the outside, water had formed between the individual blocks, meaning the ice was slowly disappearing from the spaces inside the enormous frozen mass.
That small detail reveals how experimental the entire operation really was.
The surviving ice was eventually stored in Calcutta's ice houses, turning imported cold into a commercial luxury. What began as a gamble became a regular trade, with American ice later reaching other Indian cities including Madras and Bombay.
