A 2,300-Year-Old Ancient Egyptian Mummy That Has Never Been Opened
For more than a century, Egyptologists have been fascinated by the enigmatic mummy known as Bashiri. Despite being discovered in 1919 in the Valley of the Kings by renowned Egyptologist Howard Carter, the mummy's identity remains unknown, according to Euronews. The find is notable for its incredibly uncommon embalming method, with fabric wrappings arranged in a complex geometric pattern resembling the architecture of Egypt’s famous pyramids. In 1919, the famous Egyptologist Howard Carter excavated the Valley of the Kings, one of the world's most renowned sites for the tombs of Egypt's greatest pharaohs. During the excavation, he discovered what is now called the Bashiri Mummy, which was laid to rest in a manner unlike any other found in the region. This mummy stands apart from the rest due to a unique wrapping technique and the equally mysterious, elaborate workmanship of the cloths themselves. The wrapping process, featuring a pattern never seen before on Egyptian mummies, is tied to the ongoing mystery surrounding the individual's identity. For some 2,000 years, the peculiar pattern of embalming—its very portents reflecting Egypt's pyramids—signifies that this was not an ordinary individual but one of great stature and importance.
Why Bashiri’s Mummy still unopened?
Archaeologists and researchers have not opened the mummy for further study because the mummified cloths are extremely delicate. The meticulous and careful wrapping means that unwrapping them could cause irreparable damage to this sole example of that mummification method. Disturbing the cloths would obliterate vital historical evidence, which may provide further insight into ancient Egyptian burial practices or more information about the individual interred.
For this reason, specialists utilize modern, non-invasive technologies to inspect the mummy. CT scans and X-rays are used to examine the mummified remains without handling or damaging the wrappings. Some pertinent details have emerged about the man inside, who is approximately 167 cm (5'5") tall. The most important fact so far is that the mummification took place during the Ptolemaic period of Egypt, around the 3rd century BCE.
The mummy's identity remains obscure despite the wealth of information obtained through advanced scanning methods. A barely discernible, hastily scribbled inscription within the tomb serves as the only hint to the individual's name. Experts are still uncertain whether the inscription reads "Bashiri" or "Neno," as they have yet to confirm the correct interpretation. Still, this uncertainty only deepens the mystery surrounding the mummy.

One of the major decorations of the Bashiri Mummy is the numerous paintings on its wrappings, which artistically depict life, status, and possibly the individual's role in society. On the chest of the mummy, a side lock made of beads is strung together in the shape of a hawk's head, possibly symbolizing wealth and power in ancient Egypt. This suggests that the individual was of great worth and might have belonged to a royal or priestly lineage.
Moreover, the cloths reveal numerous scenes that further elucidate the burial customs of that time. Of particular note is the representation of the mummy reclining on a couch in the presence of the deities Isis and Nephthys, along with the four sons of Horus. These symbols were commonly invoked during the Ptolemaic period, probably denoting the protection and guidance bestowed upon the deceased in the afterlife. Further sections of the wrappings also depict Anubis, the god responsible for mummification and burial, emphasizing the religious significance attached to this person's death and transition to the afterlife.
